movie

Today in Human Geo, we continued watching the movie from yesterday. The two brothers, now orphans, met another child their age. Later, a man comes and offers the children a coke, and are taught songs, as well as given plenty to eat. one day one of the brothers sees the man blinding another child's eyes out, blinding him. Afterwords, the children run away, leaving Latika after climbing on a train. This was a very sad part of the movie. The children carry on with thir lives, coming up with ways to make money. They then come into contact with the man that was blinding children, after seeing Latika again. From watching this section of the film, i easily recognized how different the culture in India is from ours. For example, adults are much more violent to kids than in the US. Also, in the United States, someone would have seen these orphans, and they would have been put straight into foster care. Americans would find it unacceptable for a child that young to be on their own. I am excited to see the rest of the movie, because I am curious to know what happens with the man accused of cheating in the game show.

11.20.14

The main thing we did in Human Geogeraphy class was watching a movie. But first, Mr. Schick was telling us about our extra credit assignment.(It's due Saturday at Midnight)
The movie was very grasping. I am sure I made so many facial expressions. It took place in the slums of India. It was about this boy who won a million dollars on a game show. The story should go on to be 'hunky dory", but it doesn't. The police question him because there is no way a person with little education could win a million dollars answering questions. These questions turn to torture; shockng, head in water bucket, and constant slapping. I am liking this movie, and am excited to see more of it. .

human geo extra credit

The song ABC by the Jackson 5 could represent one of America's pull forces. A person may come to America to get a better education than they would receive in their home country. Just look at how many international come to John Carroll.
The song Hard Knock Life  by Alicia Morton is a song that could symbolize the push forces of third world countries, where people work day in and day out, but make little money. These people live in sadness, and poverty, and in hunger.

today in human geo 11.18.14

Today in Human Geogeraphy, we kicked off our culture unit by looking at a map of what people call soft drinks. I just assumed everyone called it soda, but earlier (maybe the 50s) it was called it pop, but that was not the case. North, around Chicago, i is called pop. one the east and west coast, it is called soda. South, around Texas and Florida, people just call it coke. I thought that it was a pretty cool map. Then we took notes on exactly what culture is. Culture is what parents teach their children, such as what to call things, and how to do things, and what foods to eat etc.  I thought tha it was a pretty fun class, and I am excited to see what we do tomorrow.

Mexico's National Anthem

Mexican National anthem with English translation! It reminds me of the American national anthem because it talks bout war. It also has a very similar sound.

11.13.14 test

Today in class we took our unit test. There were a few things that I wished I had studied a little better.before taking it, such as the question with all of the percentages of votes with some leader. That, I could seem to remember anything. One thing that I did like about the test, was that if you knew one thing, it would still help you figure out the answer in a very indirect way. Of all the tests that we have taken this year I feel the most confident about this one. I liked the essay question, and that is what I suspected it to be, so I was thinking about it all day today. i was pleased with this unit, an am excited to see what we learn next unit.

11.12.14

Today in Human Geo, we made sure that everyone could have permission to view the power points so that we could study for tomorrow's test. We reviewed this unit to refresh our memories. We went over how America should be ashamed of the amount of presidents assassinated in office, while Canada has  had no leaders killed in office, just one attempted murder. we talked about what the prime minister's job is (i.e. David Cameron). We also talked about how England's Queen has no power, all power goes to prime minister.

11.11.14

Today in class, we dicussed the similar random things usually discussed at the beginning of class, i.e. John's oatmeal. Then we met Cody's shadow. we managed to fit 5, including Mr Schick's, presentations into class today, as I was trying to type very quickly.  Class officially began with Paj and Alex doing their presentation on Syria. Next Stephan and Trish did their presentation on Israel.
Third, Jessica and I went. After our presentation, Mr. Schick told us about the horrifying current event in Mexico. Then, Ellee gave her presentation on  Brazil by herself. Then finally, Mr. Schick showed us that he made a power point presentation with links to student presentations on countries as well as some additional notes that will be a handy study aid for tomorrow's test.

human geo 11.7.14

In human geogeraphy class, we had two shadows. Overall, I think that they both enjoyed the class, especially because we were given cookies. Karson and Cody presented their power point on Russia. That was very interesting, especially because Karson had some primary sources on Vladimir Putin. I never realized how powerful he was until they presented. I had always known that he was a pretty powerful guy, but how he treats that power is scary is quite scary. What was very scary to me was that people though of him as God.  Next, Ryan and Meghan did their presentation on China. Ryan was especially knoweledgeable about china because china is his home country. It was cool to hear him pronounce those long and complicated names of the leaders in china. I am excited to see who present on Monday, although I think it may be Jessica and I.

presentation 11.6.14

Today in class we went over presentations. Parker and John began with Germany. One thing that I found very interesting was the berlin wall. It was made of concrete that split east and west Germany so that they could not have communication with each other. The two were reunited October 3 1990 as a Federal Republic.  joachim is the president of germany, but he is not the most powerful person in the nation.  He has been president since 2012, and his first term ends in 2017. He is allowed to run for re election for one more five year term. Angela Merkel is the person more powerful than Joachim Gauck.  She has been the chancellor of Germany since 2012. The citizens can overthrow there leaders with impeachment.
Next, Kendall and Adam presented Japan. I was surprised by how similar their government was to ours. The have the same 3 branches of government that America has. What I found interesting was that Japan is the oldest continuing Monarchy in the world. Japan is also like England, they have a symbolic had of state. Japan has an emperor, like England has a queen.  Japan also has a prime minister, Shizno Abe, and he is the primary leader of the country. The prime minister has no limit to how many terms he can serve, just as long he continues to be re elected. to change leadership, the people can make a Peaceful petition,.There are  some other interesting facts. In Japan the minimum voting age is 20 years old.
